Protruding front teeth means the upper front teeth sit further forward horizontally than the lower ones by more than the normal amount, a condition described clinically as an increased overjet. Treatment options include fixed braces or clear aligners, with or without extractions, elastics or anchorage devices to settle the bite, functional appliances in growing children, and orthognathic surgery combined with braces for skeletal cases in adults. The decision to extract teeth or to operate is not a cosmetic preference to be requested; it is determined by clinical examination, measurements and radiographs, and more than one acceptable plan may exist for the same case.
The limits should be stated frankly. Orthodontics moves teeth and does not reposition an adult jaw, so severe skeletal cases cannot be corrected by braces alone and may require surgery. Cosmetic veneers and crowns do not treat a genuine protrusion and can make the appearance worse. And the result itself is not permanent without retention: a retainer after braces is not optional; neglecting it lets the teeth drift forward again, which is the commonest reason a good result is lost.
