Abdominal Pain: Causes & When to See a Doctor
ألم البطن
Abdominal pain is discomfort in the stomach and intestinal area, which may feel like cramps, burning, or constant ache. It has many causes, most of them minor such as indigestion or gas, but some cases need urgent evaluation. Noting the pain location and severity helps.
What is Abdominal Pain?
Abdominal pain does not always come from the stomach. The abdomen contains the bowel, liver, gallbladder and other organs. Pain may be widespread or localized, constant or cramping. Indigestion, constipation and infections are possible causes, alongside conditions requiring urgent treatment.
Pain intensity does not reliably indicate how serious the cause is. Persistent or worsening pain needs assessment, especially with other symptoms. Seek emergency care for sudden sharp pain, a rigid tender abdomen, blood in vomit or stool, or vomiting with inability to pass stool. A symptom guide cannot identify the cause for an individual.
Possible causes
- Indigestion, gas, and constipation.
- Gastritis or acid reflux.
- Viral or bacterial intestinal infection.
- Cramps associated with menstrual cycle in women.
- Psychological stress may worsen digestive system symptoms.
These are common causes; abdominal pain may result from multiple conditions, so medical evaluation is necessary if in doubt.
When to see a doctor
Consult your doctor if:
- The pain persists or worsens over one or two days.
- It is accompanied by repeated vomiting, ongoing diarrhea, or fever.
Seek emergency care immediately for severe sudden abdominal pain, rigid and tender abdomen when touched, bloody vomit or stool, or pain accompanied by severe dizziness or fainting.
