Joint Pain: Causes & When to See a Doctor
ألم المفاصل
Joint pain is discomfort or stiffness in one or more joints, sometimes with swelling or redness. Its causes are common, such as overuse, aging, or inflammation. Many cases are managed with rest and care, but severe or persistent swelling warrants medical evaluation.
What is Joint Pain?
Joint pain may affect one or several joints, sometimes with swelling, stiffness or reduced movement. Causes include injuries, osteoarthritis and inflammatory conditions; pain alone cannot distinguish them.
Seek assessment if pain recurs or affects sleep or activity. A hot, swollen joint with fever or feeling unwell needs urgent assessment. After an injury, severe pain or inability to bear weight requires emergency care.
Possible causes
- Stress or overuse of the joint.
- Sports injuries or sprains.
- Changes related to aging.
- Inflammatory conditions of the joints.
- Excess weight that strains the joints.
These are common causes; joint pain may result from multiple conditions requiring medical evaluation.
Self-care
Reduce activities that worsen pain, but avoid stopping movement entirely for prolonged periods. Suitable movement and care depend on the cause.
When to see a doctor
Consult your doctor if:
- Pain or stiffness lasts more than two weeks.
- Accompanied by swelling, redness, or warmth in the joint.
- Interferes with your movement or daily activity.
Seek prompt care for sudden severe swelling, joint pain with fever, or inability to move the joint after an injury.
