What is Nausea?

Nausea is the feeling that you might vomit, even without vomiting. It may accompany stomach infections, reflux, migraine or pregnancy, and can relate to medicines or motion sickness.

Seek medical advice if it lasts several days or keeps recurring. Sudden nausea with chest heaviness or pain, or shortness of breath, requires emergency care. Vomiting that prevents you keeping fluids down can cause dehydration and needs assessment.

Possible causes

  • Indigestion or overeating.
  • Viral or bacterial gastrointestinal infection.
  • Motion sickness during travel.
  • Early pregnancy in women.
  • Certain medications or strong odors.

These are common general causes; persistent nausea may require medical evaluation.

Self-care

Try frequent small sips and smaller meals. Avoid strong smells and greasy foods that worsen nausea.

When to see a doctor

Consult your doctor if:

  • Nausea or vomiting persists for more than one or two days.
  • It prevents you from drinking fluids and signs of dehydration appear.

Seek emergency care immediately if you experience bloody vomit or vomit the color of coffee grounds, nausea accompanied by chest pain or severe sudden headache, confusion, or severe abdominal pain.
