Can a person get mumps more than once?

ClinicsJo Editorial Teamاقرأ بالعربية21 views

In general, a single case of mumps is sufficient to stimulate the immune system to build strong defenses against the virus, and this natural infection usually provides lifelong immunity. This means that recurrence of mumps is extremely rare in healthy individuals who have a sound immune response. However, there are exceptional cases where people, even those who have been vaccinated in the past, can become infected during outbreaks, although the symptoms in these cases are often milder compared to those who have not been previously vaccinated or infected [1].

How does the body acquire immunity against mumps?

Protection against mumps occurs through two primary mechanisms, both of which aim to train the immune system to recognize the virus:

  • Natural Infection: Upon exposure to the virus, the body begins producing specialized IgG antibodies. These antibodies act as a long-term protective shield against future infection with the disease [1].
  • Vaccination: The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) is the most effective means of prevention. Two doses are recommended for children; the first between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second between 4 and 6 years of age. Adults who do not have proof of immunity are advised to receive at least one dose, with the need for a second dose determined by a physician based on their health status and surrounding risks [1].

When is testing for immunity necessary?

Most people do not need routine testing, but a physician may request blood tests to check for the presence of (IgG) antibodies in specific situations, such as: planning a pregnancy, applying for certain jobs that require proof of immunity, working in the healthcare sector, or if there is doubt about having sufficient protection after exposure to infected individuals [1]. These tests clarify whether the body possesses the necessary protection or if it remains susceptible to the virus.

Signs requiring immediate medical attention

Although most cases resolve on their own within two weeks, mumps can sometimes lead to complications that require careful monitoring. If symptoms develop into conditions such as very high fever accompanied by a stiff neck, severe headache, changes in level of consciousness, or seizures, you must go to the emergency room immediately or consult a physician, as these signs may indicate the possibility of inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues, which are rare but serious complications [1] [2].
