What is the difference between gastric sleeve and gastric bypass?
Sleeve gastrectomy removes a large part of the stomach, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach without rerouting the intestines. Gastric bypass creates a small stomach pouch connected to the intestine so that food bypasses part of the stomach and small intestine.
Both procedures affect food intake and appetite regulation; bypass also changes absorption. Vitamin deficiencies can occur after either operation, so follow-up and supplements are needed according to the clinical plan. Sleeve surgery may worsen reflux in some patients. Individual benefits and risks vary.
Discuss reflux, diabetes, previous surgery, expectations and your ability to attend follow-up with the surgeon. Do not make the decision from a guaranteed weight-loss percentage or a general comparison. Arrange an assessment through the doctor directory.
