What is the importance of choosing appropriate shoes for foot health?

Choosing the right footwear is crucial for maintaining foot health, as the feet support the entire body's weight and allow for movement. Appropriate shoes help distribute pressure evenly, reducing the risk of foot pain and related issues, which can also affect the knees, hips, and back [2].

Why is appropriate footwear essential for foot health?

Each foot consists of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments that work together to support the body and enable movement [2]. When shoes are inappropriate, they place unnecessary stress on this complex system. Good shoes not only protect the feet from external factors but also absorb shock, reducing stress on joints and soft tissues. If the foot does not receive sufficient support, it can lead to imbalances in movement, potentially causing pain in the back, hips, or knees over time due to changes in gait [2].

How do inappropriate shoes affect the feet?

Shoes that do not meet health standards contribute to an increased risk of painful foot conditions. Excessive pressure from tight or ill-fitting shoes can lead to direct friction, causing corns and calluses [2]. Furthermore, abnormal foot shapes, such as hammertoes or bunions, may worsen or develop due to the constant pressure exerted by shoes that do not provide enough space for the toes to move freely [3]. In addition, poor ventilation in certain types of shoes can lead to a warm, moist environment, encouraging the growth of fungi that cause infections like athlete's foot [3].

Criteria for choosing healthy shoes

To ensure the best protection for your feet, consider the following points when choosing shoes:

  • Toe box depth: The front part of the shoe should be deep enough to avoid pressing on the top of the toes, preventing the formation of corns. If your toes are curled, you may need shoes with extra depth or a soft, flexible toe box [3].
  • Shoe length: There should be about 1 cm of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. If you feel your toes touching the end of the shoe when standing, the shoe is too short [3].
  • Shoe width and toe shape: Narrow or pointed shoes can compress the feet, potentially causing nail problems, corns, or nerve damage over time. Look for wide shoes with a rounded or square toe box to avoid pressure on the toes [3].
  • Sole: Choose shoes with a thick, cushioned sole to absorb shock, especially when walking on hard surfaces. Athletic shoes are often ideal for this purpose [3].
  • Lacing: The shoe should secure the foot well. Shoes with laces or Velcro allow you to secure the shoe at the arch, leaving enough space for the toes to function correctly. Slip-on shoes may require the foot muscles to tense up to keep them on, which can cause pain in the forefoot [3].
  • Heel height: It is preferable for the heel height to be less than 4 cm (1.5 inches) to avoid shifting the body's weight forward, which can cause foot and back problems. Wide heels provide greater stability [3].
  • Materials: Choose materials that allow the foot to breathe, such as leather or "breathable" synthetic materials, to avoid the accumulation of sweat which can encourage fungal growth [3].

When should you consult a doctor regarding foot health?

Persistent pain or structural changes in the foot should not be ignored. If you notice swelling, redness, sharp pain that does not resolve with rest, or any changes in the skin and nails, it is necessary to consult a doctor. This is particularly critical for patients with diabetes, as minor injuries can lead to serious complications due to poor blood flow and nerve damage associated with the disease [2]. Regular foot examinations remain an indispensable preventive measure for the early detection of issues that may reflect deeper health disorders such as arthritis or heart disease [1].
