Using health insurance with orthopedic doctors
An orthopedic consultation is often covered as an outpatient visit at network clinics with a co-payment, and plain X-rays are included by many policies. MRI scans, extended physiotherapy and operations such as arthroscopy or joint replacement usually need prior approval. Knowing these conditions before the visit shortens the wait between diagnosis and treatment.
Often covered
- An orthopedic visit for joint pain, back pain or injuries is often covered as outpatient care.
- Plain X-rays of bones and joints are covered by many policies when ordered by the doctor.
- Treating and casting simple fractures in the clinic is often included in cover.
- Physiotherapy sessions are covered by many policies with a doctor referral and up to a set number of sessions.
Often excluded, limited or needing approval
- MRI and CT scans of joints and the spine often need prior approval.
- Joint replacement and arthroscopy may require prior approval and a waiting period for chronic conditions under many policies.
- Braces, medical shoes, insoles and orthopedic mattresses are often excluded or covered under a small cap.
- Platelet-rich plasma and joint lubricant injections are excluded by many policies or need special approval.
Check before you book
- Before booking an MRI, ask the clinic to submit the prior approval request and confirm the imaging center is contracted.
- Ask how many physiotherapy sessions are covered each year and which physiotherapy centers are in the network.
- If the injury happened at work or in a road accident, ask whether another scheme should cover it instead.
- Bring your card, ID and previous scans, and ask for an itemized invoice listing casts and supplies.
General guidance only: what is covered depends on your policy. Confirm with your insurer.
