Is colouring hair during pregnancy safe?

Quick answer

Hair dye absorption through healthy skin is generally low when used correctly, and available information does not suggest a major risk from ordinary personal use. Waiting until after 12 weeks is an optional precaution, not proof that earlier colouring is harmful.

Reduce unnecessary exposure

Follow the label, wear gloves, ensure ventilation and avoid leaving the product on longer than recommended. Do not apply it to damaged or irritated skin. Follow allergy-test instructions even for a previously used product.

Different hair treatments have different risks

Straightening or smoothing products are not interchangeable with dye, and some release irritating fumes. Ask about ingredients rather than relying on “natural” or a single free-from claim.

Salon work needs a separate assessment

Repeated occupational exposure, ventilation and protective measures require individual review. Stop a product if swelling or breathing symptoms occur; breathing difficulty is an emergency.
