Does elderberry treat colds, flu or COVID-19?

Quick answer

Elderberry research is limited and does not establish a reliable treatment for flu or COVID-19. Small studies reporting symptom improvement do not prove prevention of complications. Raw or unripe berries and other plant parts can be toxic.

Immune claims need evidence

“Boosts immunity” is not a defined clinical benefit. A theoretical concern also does not establish that elderberry causes a cytokine storm in COVID-19. Both effectiveness and harm claims need direct evidence.

Avoid homemade plant remedies

Do not eat raw berries, leaves or stems, or assume a home recipe reliably removes toxins. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can occur. Supplement safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is inadequately established.

Do not delay indicated treatment

Seek early advice if at risk of infection complications; some treatments are time-sensitive. Breathlessness, chest pain or confusion requires urgent care, not an herbal syrup.
