What causes eyebrow hair loss, and can it grow back?

Quick answer

Eyebrow loss may follow plucking, skin inflammation, alopecia areata, thyroid problems or other causes. Regrowth depends on the cause and whether follicles remain intact. It is not always vitamin deficiency; persistent loss, redness or scarring needs examination.

Examination guides treatment

Describe onset, eyelash or scalp involvement, itching, scaling and products used. Targeted blood tests or further skin assessment may be appropriate; thyroid testing is not automatically the answer for every case.

Protect the eye area

Avoid repeated plucking and irritating products. Do not apply scalp hair-growth solutions or potent steroids near the eyes without advice. Treatment for one cause may be unsuitable for infection, inflammation or scarring hair loss.

Set realistic expectations

Hair may regrow after a non-scarring cause is treated, but this takes time and is not guaranteed. Supplements are useful when a clinical need is identified; extra doses do not necessarily accelerate growth. Rapid loss or scarring warrants early dermatology review.
