Is female genital cosmetic surgery necessary or risk-free?

Quick answer

Normal genital appearance varies widely, and a difference in appearance does not make surgery necessary. Surgery may be considered for a diagnosed functional problem, but benefits of purely cosmetic procedures are incompletely established. Scarring, pain, altered sensation and further surgery are possible.

Details

Identify the actual concern

Pain, irritation or difficulty with activities needs assessment; a skin condition or another problem may be treatable without surgery. Visible or asymmetrical labia can be normal. There is no single appearance required for health or sexual satisfaction.

Questions before deciding

  • What is the realistic goal and what alternatives exist?
  • What are the surgeon’s experience, complication outcomes and follow-up arrangements?
  • How might sensation or comfort during sex change?

Allow time to decide

Avoid pressure from advertising or a partner. Seek an independent opinion if uncertain and discuss distress about body image. Popularity does not establish necessity or individual safety.
