What is the difference between Mounjaro and Ozempic?
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts at two hormone receptors; Ozempic contains semaglutide, which acts at one. Indications, doses and devices differ, and this does not make one medicine best for every patient.
Details
Different mechanisms
Tirzepatide acts at GIP and GLP-1 receptors; semaglutide acts at GLP-1 receptors. Both can improve glucose control and affect appetite. Individual outcomes depend on dose, tolerability, health circumstances and follow-up.
Choosing between them
The treatment goal, organ function, other medicines, local indications and access to monitoring matter. Milligram doses are not equivalent, and the products should not be combined without specialist direction. Persistent gastrointestinal symptoms or severe abdominal pain needs review. Some accompanying diabetes treatments increase hypoglycaemia risk.
An important contraceptive difference
Tirzepatide prescribing information advises a non-oral contraceptive method or an additional barrier method for four weeks after starting and after each dose increase. Discuss this with the prescriber. Also report pregnancy plans and procedures requiring anaesthesia before changing treatment.
