What are the risks of tattoos and permanent makeup, and how can I spot problems?

Quick answer

Tattoos and permanent makeup can cause infection, pigment allergy or scarring, including delayed reactions. Sterile equipment and good practice reduce but do not eliminate risk; ink itself may be contaminated. Removal is not always straightforward or complete.

Before deciding

Discuss allergies, keloid history, medical conditions and medicines affecting healing. Check the practitioner’s local licensing, appropriate disposable or sterilised equipment, ink source and written aftercare.

Changes needing assessment

Spreading redness, increasing pain, discharge or fever warrants review. Persistent rash, itching or nodules may reflect allergy or another inflammatory reaction rather than a problem to treat with a random cream. Facial swelling or difficulty breathing is an emergency.

If you want removal

Response depends on pigment colour, depth, location and skin tone. Laser treatment may take several sessions and leave residual colour, pigmentation changes or scars. Consult a qualified clinician instead of using corrosive products or unverified home devices.
