Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition — not merely social embarrassment — in which the body sweats more than needed for temperature regulation, most often in the armpits, palms, soles or face, and it can interfere with work, writing and handling objects and carry a genuine psychological burden.

Botulinum toxin injection is one effective option in localised cases: it is injected superficially into the skin in a grid of closely spaced points, temporarily blocking nerve signalling to the sweat glands in the injected area so sweat production there falls markedly. Palm injections are more painful and need local anaesthesia or cooling, and may be accompanied by slight temporary weakness of grip strength, which should be known in advance. Injection is excluded in pregnancy and breastfeeding and with certain neuromuscular diseases, and the decision follows medical assessment.
