عملية شد الرقبة التجميلية
A neck lift is surgery that treats a sagging neck by addressing its three causes together: excess skin, accumulated fat, and separation of the platysma muscle, which produces the vertical bands visible at the front of the neck. It is performed through concealed incisions around the ear and beneath the chin, allowing the skin to be redraped and tightened while the edges of the muscle are sutured in the midline to restore the neck angle. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia, or local anaesthesia with deep sedation, and may be combined with liposuction or other facial procedures within one plan. The technique is chosen according to what dominates the problem: a patient whose main issue is redundant skin needs actual skin excision, one whose muscle bands dominate needs muscle repair, and one with mainly fat may be served by liposuction. In practice the elements are combined according to the examination. Suitability is decided by clinical examination, not by the patient's request. The surgeon assesses skin elasticity, thickness and the amount of excess, palpates fat above and below the muscle, examines the platysma bands, and checks the position of the submandibular gland, the length of the chin and the position of the lower jaw. A patient with a structurally short chin may not achieve a good angle from a lift alone, and a heavy smoker or someone with uncontrolled blood pressure is asked to address that first, because the risk of bleeding and haematoma is higher. The limits must be stated before consent. A neck lift does not stop ageing: laxity returns gradually over the years, even if it starts from a better position. It does not treat skin pigmentation or fine horizontal lines, does not change the texture of sun-damaged skin, does not lengthen a short chin or correct a bite problem, and does not reduce your weight. Liposuction alone is insufficient for lax skin, and promises of comparable tightening without surgery do not deliver what removing excess skin delivers. Scars exist, though concealed, and how they mature depends on your skin. Verify that the facility is licensed, that the surgeon is certified in plastic surgery, and that safe anaesthesia and facilities to manage complications are available, through the official Jordanian authorities. A neck lift is real surgery near major vessels and motor nerves and does not belong in a clinic that is not equipped for it.
Procedure steps
- 1
Anatomical assessment of the sagging components
The surgeon evaluates excess skin and its elasticity, fat above and below the muscle, the platysma bands, the position of the submandibular gland and the length of the chin. Chronic illnesses, medications, smoking and blood pressure are reviewed, and it is decided which components need treatment and which will not benefit from surgery.
- 2
Planning and anaesthetic preparation
Incisions are drawn around the ear and beneath the chin at concealed sites, and the type of anaesthesia, the expected duration and the pain plan are agreed. Chronic conditions are optimised, medicines that increase bleeding are stopped on medical advice, and a realistic written goal is agreed, including where scars will lie.
- 3
Fat treatment and muscle repair
Fat above the muscle is aspirated, or fat beneath it is removed in a measured amount, then the edges of the platysma are brought together and sutured in the midline to eliminate the bands and restore the neck angle. The muscle is addressed symmetrically on both sides, and bleeding points are controlled meticulously.
- 4
Skin redraping and excision
The skin is redraped upwards and backwards without excessive tension, and the excess is trimmed in a measured amount, because over-tightening distorts the ear and widens the scar. The layers are closed without tension, and a small drain may be left for one night to reduce the risk of haematoma.
- 5
Recovery and close follow-up
A dressing or compression garment is applied and the patient is monitored for several hours or overnight, with warning signs explained in detail because an early haematoma is an emergency. Follow-up visits are scheduled to remove sutures and assess sensation, mouth movement and neck contour over the following weeks.
Before the procedure
Tell your surgeon about every medicine and supplement you take, especially blood thinners, aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin E and herbal products, and stop a long-term medicine only on medical advice. Disclose hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, clotting disorders, thyroid problems or any previous difficult anaesthetic, and get your blood pressure controlled beforehand, since raised pressure increases the risk of haematoma. Stop smoking and all forms of nicotine before and after surgery for the period your surgeon specifies: smoking is the single biggest cause of impaired healing and skin loss in this operation. Stabilise your weight first. Postpone if you have a skin, dental or throat infection. Follow the fasting instructions, and arrange transport home and someone to stay with you overnight. Prepare pillows for sleeping with your head raised, a compression garment, front-buttoning shirts, soft food for a few days, and at least two weeks off work.
After the procedure
Sleep on your back with your head raised, avoid bending or forcefully turning your neck, do not lift weights or exert yourself for as long as your surgeon advises, and wear the compression garment for the specified period. Expect swelling, bruising, tightness, numbness, firmness and a lumpy feeling beneath the skin that improves over four to eight weeks, with firmness or numbness sometimes lasting months. Protect the incisions from sun once healed, and avoid hair dye and swimming until permitted. **Go to emergency care immediately for rapid one-sided swelling, severe increasing pain, a choking tightness, bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a change in your voice, as this may be a haematoma needing urgent intervention.** **Seek care immediately for fever, purulent discharge, spreading redness, a foul smell, or darkening or peeling of the skin edge near the ear.** Report obvious weakness at the corner of the mouth, an asymmetric smile, or persistent numbness.
Expected duration
Usually two to four hours depending on how much skin, fat and muscle is addressed, longer if combined with other procedures, and an overnight stay for monitoring is sometimes required. Return to work is commonly after two to three weeks, most swelling settles over six to eight weeks, and the final result appears after three to six months.
