Do mobile phone electromagnetic fields cause cancer?

ClinicsJo Editorial Teamاقرأ بالعربية3 views

Concerns have been raised about the potential for mobile phones to cause certain types of cancer or other health issues, given their widespread use and the radiofrequency radiation they emit. However, current scientific evidence strongly indicates that mobile phone use does not cause brain cancer or any other types of cancer in humans. Despite this, scientists continue to conduct research to evaluate any potential long-term effects [2].

The nature of radiation in mobile phones

Mobile phones emit radiation that falls within the radiofrequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Frequencies for cellular communication generations (2G to 4G) range between 0.7 and 2.7 GHz, while 5G frequencies can reach up to 80 GHz. These frequencies fall into the category of non-ionizing radiation, which is characterized by energy levels that are too low to directly damage DNA or cells [1] [2]. This is fundamentally different from high-energy ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, which has the ability to cause direct damage to genetic material [1].

The only clearly recognized biological effect resulting from the absorption of radiofrequency energy is a slight heating of body tissues near the phone, such as the ear or head; this heating is insufficient to significantly raise the body's core temperature. No other serious health effects on the human body have been clearly and scientifically proven as a result of this exposure [2].

Epidemiological studies and incidence rates

Researchers have analyzed data on the incidence of brain and central nervous system cancers during periods coinciding with the significant increase in mobile phone use. Results have shown a notable stability in the incidence rates of gliomas, acoustic neuromas, and meningiomas, in both adults and children [2]. Research has also included large-scale studies such as the (Interphone) study and the (COSMOS) study, which collectively concluded that there is no evidence linking mobile phone use to the development of cancerous tumors [2].

How can exposure to electromagnetic fields be reduced?

If an individual prefers to reduce their exposure to these fields as a precautionary measure, simple practical steps can be taken:

  • Reduce the total time spent on mobile phone calls [3].
  • Use earphones or the speakerphone setting to keep the phone away from the head area [3].
  • Remember that the strength of the magnetic field decreases very rapidly as the distance between the user and the radiation source increases [1].

It is always necessary to consult a physician if any unexplained health symptoms appear, and one should not assume that phone usage is the direct cause of any medical condition.
