When can snoring indicate obstructive sleep apnoea?

Quick answer

Not all snoring is sleep apnoea. Loud snoring with witnessed breathing pauses, night-time choking or daytime sleepiness deserves assessment. Sleep testing is selected when clinically suspected; not every snorer needs the same test or surgery.

Ask someone who observes your sleep

Descriptions of pauses and choking help, together with medicines, sedatives and nasal blockage. A recording may aid the history but cannot replace a sleep test or establish severity.

Changes that may help

Side sleeping, weight reduction when appropriate, and avoiding smoking and alcohol may help. Do not self-start sleeping pills or tape your mouth shut without breathing assessment. Treating the nose alone may not resolve sleep-related airway obstruction.

Treatment follows the findings

Options can include positive airway pressure, an oral appliance or selected procedures, depending on the condition. Follow-up supports fit and consistent use. Avoid driving or machinery when sleepiness makes it unsafe and arrange timely assessment.
