What can cause waking at night gasping or short of breath?

Quick answer

Waking gasping may relate to sleep apnoea, asthma, reflux, heart problems or other causes. The description alone cannot establish heart failure. Severe current breathlessness, chest pain or blue lips is an emergency.

Details

During severe breathing difficulty

Call emergency services if you cannot speak normally or have chest heaviness, confusion or fainting. Do not wait until morning or drive yourself. Follow an existing prescribed emergency plan without delaying help.

If the episode settles but recurs

Arrange prompt review. Mention snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, daytime sleepiness, needing extra pillows, leg swelling and cough. Findings determine whether sleep testing or heart and lung assessment is appropriate.

Avoid masking symptoms

Do not use sedatives to sleep through episodes or assume anxiety without evaluation. Avoid driving if drowsiness makes it unsafe. Treatment depends on the cause; buying breathing equipment or random inhalers is not a substitute for assessment.
