Do collagen supplements improve skin and reduce wrinkles?

Quick answer

Some studies suggest modest improvements in hydration or elasticity, but findings vary with study quality, funding and product formulation. Evidence does not justify guaranteed wrinkle treatment or one dose for everyone. Supplements do not replace basic skin care.

Read marketing critically

Products may combine collagen with other ingredients, making attribution difficult. Trials can be small and brief. A 2025 review found that positive effects were not demonstrated in the same way in non-industry-funded studies. Before-and-after photographs are not equivalent to strong clinical evidence.

It is not delivered straight to wrinkles

Protein is digested into smaller components rather than being directed entirely to facial skin. Adequate nutrition matters, but extra high-dose vitamin C does not automatically prove greater collagen-supplement benefit.

Before buying

Check sources such as fish or cattle, allergies, ingredients and cost. Discuss use during pregnancy or chronic illness and stop for allergic symptoms. Prioritise sun protection and suitable skin care, and ask a dermatologist about established options for the specific concern.
