Is mayonnaise unhealthy, and how should I choose it?
Mayonnaise is not automatically off limits, but it is energy dense and formulations vary. Portion size, fat type and salt within the whole meal matter. “Light” or “avocado oil” on the label alone does not establish a healthier or universally suitable product.

Make a practical comparison
Compare equal amounts for calories, saturated fat and salt. A small portion may provide enough flavour. Plain yogurt can replace some mayonnaise if suitable, with attention to milk or egg allergy.
Homemade mayonnaise and raw eggs
Recipes containing raw eggs may transmit infection. Use pasteurised eggs or egg products, especially when serving pregnant people, young children or those with reduced immunity. Check the label rather than assuming every commercial product has the same safety characteristics.
Follow refrigeration and use-by instructions after opening and use a clean utensil. Mayonnaise does not prevent other ingredients in a salad from becoming unsafe when left unrefrigerated.
