Are ketamine and esketamine safe treatments for depression?

Quick answer

Specialist-supervised treatment may suit selected depression cases, but it is not safe for everyone or free from misuse risk. Ketamine and esketamine nasal spray differ in product, indication and regulation. Assessment and monitoring are essential; self-administration is not a substitute.

Distinguish the products

Esketamine is a specific product with US indications for adult depression; ketamine used for depression has a different regulatory position. Approval abroad does not establish availability or licensing in Jordan, which must be checked locally.

Risks requiring monitoring

Sedation, dissociation, raised blood pressure and respiratory depression can occur, and misuse is possible. The US esketamine nasal-spray label requires at least two hours of monitoring and assessment before discharge. This is not routine home treatment.

Before deciding

Review diagnosis, previous treatments, vascular and blood-pressure problems, pregnancy, medicines and substance use. Arrange transport and follow driving and follow-up instructions. Possible rapid improvement does not mean permanent recovery or proven suicide prevention. Imminent self-harm risk requires emergency care.
