How can I reduce back pain during desk work and prolonged sitting?

Quick answer

A well-arranged workstation, changing position and movement breaks can improve desk-work comfort. No single posture must be held all day, and no chair guarantees prevention. Activity outside work and assessment of persistent symptoms also matter.

Details

Adjust everyday equipment

Support the feet and keep the back comfortable. Bring the keyboard and mouse close to avoid sustained reaching. Position the screen for reading without constant bending; a laptop stand and separate keyboard may help during long use.

Vary tasks and position

Take regular short movement or walking breaks before discomfort builds, alternating sitting and standing when comfortable. Standing still for hours is not a cure, and expensive equipment is not essential to start improving habits.

Do not blame every symptom on the desk

Persistent or worsening pain, fever or weight loss needs review. Leg weakness, genital-area numbness or bladder or bowel changes requires emergency assessment. Exercises should fit your ability and symptoms.
