Why do itching or skin rashes return when the seasons change?

Quick answer

A rash that returns seasonally is not one diagnosis. Dryness, irritants, hives or sunlight may be involved, alongside other possible causes. Its appearance, location, duration and possible triggers help guide assessment and treatment.

Details

Record the pattern

Photograph the rash when it appears and note sun exposure, new products, plants or workplace substances. Temporary raised wheals differ from cracked skin or a rash limited to sun-exposed areas; they do not all need the same treatment.

Reasonable initial care

Avoid a suspected product and use a gentle cleanser and fragrance-free moisturizer for dryness. Do not apply strong steroid creams or bleaching mixtures to the face without assessment. Antihistamines can help hives but do not treat every cause of itching.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment for recurrent, persistent or sleep-disrupting rashes. Tongue or throat swelling, difficulty breathing or collapse with a rash needs emergency care immediately. Do not wait for a cream or allergy tablet to work when these symptoms occur.
