Are sweet potatoes healthier than white potatoes for diabetes?

Quick answer

Both can fit a balanced diet. Orange sweet potatoes provide beta-carotene, but are not always lower in their glucose effect. Nutrients and glycaemic response vary with variety, portion and preparation. Neither the name nor a healthy label makes portions unlimited.

Preparation and toppings matter

Boiled or baked potatoes with modest additions differ from fried potatoes or portions covered with butter and sauces. Research shows sweet-potato glycaemic index varies with cooking, so not every preparation is low GI.

Compare the whole meal

Count the portion with other starchy foods and add vegetables and suitable protein. Fibre varies by variety, skin and preparation; sweet potatoes are not universally higher in fibre than every white potato.

For diabetes

Use carbohydrate amounts appropriate to your plan and monitor your response when advised. Dietary variety and preparation matter more than expecting one food to treat glucose levels or guarantee weight loss.
