Can yoghurt support gut bacteria, and how should I choose a product?
Yoghurt can contribute protein and calcium within a balanced diet and may contain live cultures. It is not a guaranteed treatment for bowel disease. Not every fermented food is a proven probiotic; the organisms, evidence for their effects and the actual product matter.

What do live cultures mean?
Microorganisms are used in fermentation, but some products undergo later processing that reduces their presence. Even live organisms do not automatically establish relief of bloating or a permanent microbiome change. A general “gut cleansing” promise is not a sound reason to choose a product.

Compare added sugar, serving size and fat content against your needs. Plain yoghurt may reduce added sugar compared with some sweetened varieties. People avoiding dairy need suitable alternatives, such as calcium-fortified products within their eating pattern.
Lactose intolerance is not milk allergy
Tolerance of dairy products can vary with lactose intolerance. Milk protein allergy needs an avoidance plan and appropriate advice. Do not test a product at home after a previous severe allergic reaction.
