Laser teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure in which a bleaching gel is applied to the tooth surface and then activated with light or laser energy to speed the breakdown of pigment molecules within the enamel and dentine. The result is a lighter tooth shade that is usually visible from the same session, which is what distinguishes it from gradual at-home whitening. Understanding its limits matters: whitening acts on the tooth structure itself and does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, so a front filling may need replacing afterwards to match the lightened teeth. Discolouration caused by certain medications or by deep internal deposits also responds less than surface staining from coffee, tea and smoking. A dental examination, scaling, and treatment of any decay, cracks or gum recession are required beforehand, because applying gel over a damaged tooth or exposed root noticeably increases sensitivity and irritation. Cold sensitivity after the session is common and usually temporary, easing with toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth. It is generally not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in early permanent-dentition development, and the final decision follows a clinical examination.

The dentist examines teeth, gums and existing fillings, records the current shade on a standard guide for comparison, and rules out decay or cracks that would contraindicate the procedure.

Cleaning and scaling
Plaque and calculus are removed, since the gel cannot act on a surface covered by deposits; this step alone may lighten the shade slightly.

Isolating the gums and soft tissue
A protective barrier is placed over the gums with lip and cheek retraction to keep the bleaching gel off soft tissue and reduce irritation.

Gel application and activation
The gel is applied to the front teeth and activated with laser or light for set cycles; application may be repeated within the session depending on response.

Rinsing and result assessment
The gel is rinsed off and the new shade is measured; the patient receives maintenance instructions and may be given a supportive home gel or desensitising paste.
Before the procedure
See your dentist for a full examination before booking, and complete any needed fillings or gum treatment first. Mention severe tooth sensitivity, gum recession, teeth grinding, or pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not start expecting veneers or crowns to match the outcome, and raise this explicitly if you have restorations on your front teeth. Cutting down coffee, tea and smoking before and after the session improves how long the result lasts.
After the procedure
For the first two days avoid strongly staining foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, cola, dark sauces and berries, because teeth pick up colour more readily after the session. Avoid smoking as far as possible, since it is the fastest cause of returning yellowness. Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth if cold sensitivity appears; it usually settles within days. Keep up daily brushing and flossing and routine scaling visits, because how long the result lasts depends on habits more than on the session itself. Contact your dentist if severe sensitivity persists beyond a week or clear gum irritation appears.
