Is alkaline water healthier than ordinary drinking water?

Quick answer

There is no strong evidence that alkaline water is better for most people or that it prevents cancer or cleanses the body. A higher water pH does not imply a beneficial change in blood pH. Safe drinking water in amounts suited to your needs is usually sufficient.

What does alkaline mean?

It describes a higher pH, and some products have added minerals. Small studies involving reflux or bone measures do not establish a general long-term benefit or justify replacing prescribed treatment.

Who needs extra caution?

People with kidney disease or potassium or fluid restrictions should review the product and their fluid plan with their care team. Alkaline waters are not all the same, and drinking excessive fluid is not automatically healthy.

Choose water for safety, availability and cost. Price and claims of “balancing the body” are not medical evidence. Persistent marked thirst or frequent urination warrants assessment rather than trying a more expensive water.
