Does detox tea remove toxins or help lose body fat?

Quick answer

There is no convincing evidence that detox tea removes specified toxins or produces lasting fat loss. Some products contain laxatives or diuretics and cause temporary water or stool loss, potentially leading to dehydration and electrolyte problems. “Herbal” does not guarantee safety.

Assess the claim

Ask which substance is supposedly removed and what evidence shows a meaningful health benefit, rather than relying on before-and-after photographs. Rapid weight loss after diarrhoea is not fat burning; severe restriction can undermine sustainable weight management.

Interactions and adverse effects

Herbs may interact with medicines, and some products contain undeclared ingredients. Kidney or liver disease, pregnancy and breastfeeding require particular caution. Do not use a detox product as a substitute for assessing constipation or treating a chronic condition.

Stop the product and seek care for severe diarrhoea, reduced urination, palpitations or jaundice. Fainting or confusion requires urgent help. Suspected poisoning needs emergency advice, not a cleansing drink.
