Can ginger relieve nausea, including during pregnancy?

Quick answer

Ginger may help some pregnancy-related nausea, but evidence differs by cause. It is not established for every case of motion sickness or postoperative nausea and does not automatically replace prescribed treatment. Discuss supplements with a clinician during pregnancy.

Food and supplements differ

Ginger content varies between meals, tea and capsules. Findings for a particular preparation cannot establish that every product works. Choosing a treatment dose requires knowing the condition and other medicines.

Consider tolerability

Heartburn, abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea can occur. Ask a pharmacist about interactions, especially with multiple medicines or blood thinners. A natural product is not automatically suitable for everyone.

When home care is insufficient

Persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, little urine or severe dizziness warrants assessment, particularly during pregnancy. Treatment may require appropriate medicines and fluids. Do not delay care while trying herbs.
